“…And these signs shall accompany them that believe: in my name shall they cast out demons; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents, and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall in no wise hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick and they shall recover. So then the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken unto them, was received up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God. And they went forth, and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word by the signs that followed. Amen.” (Mark 16:17-20)
The above verses have been a textual and doctrinal battleground for centuries. Set in the context of the post resurrection appearances of Jesus (Mark 16:1-13), i.e. “after he was risen” (Mark 16:14), and connected with the assignment of the Great Commission (Mark 16:15-16), it should come as no surprise that the authenticity of this crucial text has often been challenged. In this article, the authenticity of this text, as a part of the sacred canon, is assumed. However, that these verses, and the others which compose the so-called “long ending” of Mark’s gospel account, are genuine, has been unequivocally proved to be the case.
